Position: Regional Director - RR Signal Maintenance

Location: Michigan & Indiana

Reports Directly to: GM of Signal Maintenance

Overview :

A Regional Signal Director is, in part, responsible for testing, maintaining and improving signal systems at grade crossings and way-side signal locations in accordance with FRA and company standards. They are directly responsible for the performance of the signal supervisors and signal maintainers across all properties assigned to that region.

A regional signal director will be evaluated in 6 basic areas.

Key Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for testing, maintaining and improving grade crossing warning, AEI or defect detector systems on an assigned territory. Responsible for testing, maintenance and improvements of way-side, train control systems. Follow regulations and testing procedures as set forth in the Blue Book .
  • Lead and train signal maintainers, supervisors and under their responsibility.
  • Act as the primary ambassador between the company and client railroads. They must seek to foster good relationships with railroad personnel and management.
  • Act as a liaison between the company, the railroad and the FRA. Service as an escalation point for FRA interactions.
  • Complete required efficiency testing and evaluation of the maintainers and supervisors under their responsibility.
  • Willing to be On-Call much of the time and serve as a POC for signal maintainers, supervisors and other directors looking for help trouble shooting train detection and signal control systems.
  • Must have a full understanding of, and comply with, FRA rules and regulations around railroad signaling, (All applicable sections subsections in CFR 49) including the Hours of Service Law.
  • Hold supervisors and maintainers accountable for all paperwork and retention schedules. Paperwork can include: testing records, HOS forms, timesheets, material handling forms and trouble tickets. The responsibility for complete and accurate testing records and HOS documentation may continue after separation from the company; voluntary or involuntary.
  • Foster good relationships with local railroad customers and suppliers.
  • Be a team player willing to help other territories and railroads.
  • Assist with special projects when assigned.
  • A high amount of travel can be expected with this position.
  • Responsible for the safety of themselves and those around them. Reports any unsafe conditions that may exist.
  • Keep company vehicle, equipment, tools and meters in good working order; following all maintenance and calibration schedules.
  • Responsible for implementing strategies to maximize profitability across the Signal Maintenance division.
  • Other duties as required or assigned by leadership team.

Requirements :

  • Advanced knowledge of electronics and electrical fundamentals with an emphasis on low-voltage AC & DC circuits and relay or ladder logic.
  • Must be able to read wiring diagrams and use multi-meter.
  • Must be able to use advanced testing equipment such as a relay slide, megger, narrow-band shunt tester, short-finder, cable locator, etc.
  • Knowledge of rail operations generally and railroad signaling principles specifically.
  • The focus of a regional signal director could be either grade-crossing, way-side signal systems or both.
  • Possess exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have prior supervisory experience over a distributed work force.
  • At least 8 years of experience as a signal maintainer and/or signal installer.
  • Have experience testing and documenting relay tests and cable resistance tests in accordance with FRA regulations.
  • Possess a working and theoretical knowledge of grade crossing AND way-side signal systems, their function, purpose and testing requirements.
  • Signal maintaining, and supervising, at all levels, is a largely independent job thus good time management and personal initiative are essential.
  • Must be very proficient with a personal computer and the MS Office line of products.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent unless otherwise approved by upper management.
  • Prior experience in people or multi-faceted project management preferred.
  • Relatable experience in HVAC, Avionics, Communications, Motor Control and PLCs will also be evaluated as requirements for the job.
