About John G. Wood
Our specialized school, John G. Wood (JGW), is just the right size to teach students with emotional and behavioral challenges that impact their academic success. Small student-teacher ratios accommodate individual learning styles with a goal to transition students back to their public school as soon as possible. JGW includes a broad range of courses for children in kindergarten through grade 12 and Extended School Year (ESY) services are available during the summer. Some residents of VHBG’s group homes attend JGW in addition to students who commute from multiple localities in the Richmond region
About the Opportunity
The reading specialist educates identified students enrolled in John G. Wood School utilizing evidenced-based, data-driven programming to assist students with improving their reading skills.
Core duties and responsibilities:
• Works 3 days a week, 7:30am-3:30pm (days designated by Director)
• Identifies, via IEP review, students who have reading goals and works with them as indicated in the IEP (individually, in small groups, or during classroom instruction)
• Implements evidence-based practices to build relationships, engage students, and strengthen reading skills
• Utilizes the Lindamood-Bell dyslexia reading program or any John G. Wood Director approved evidence-based instruction that focuses on multisensory techniques that improve reading and comprehension skills
• Submits lesson plans weekly to Director
• Documents interventions and progress in weekly notes for all students they instruct
• Tracks progress using data
• Conducts beginning, middle, and end of year testing (working with on-line course coordinator) to evaluate student progress
• Assists with SOL testing near the end of the school year
• Follows VHBG policies regarding personal cell phone use, on time arrival, tracking hours worked (timecard), and all other JGW and VHBG policies and procedures
• Adheres to federal guidelines, state guidelines as well as accreditation requirements.
• Engages in self-reflection and growth opportunities to support high levels of learning for all students.
• Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director of JGW School.
Experience and Education:
Required:
• Professional or Provisional License in Reading, Elementary Education, or Special Education
• Must be able to successfully clear background checks associated with job and must successfully complete in-house training
Preferred:
• Masters’ degree from an accredited University or College in the field of Education, Special Education and/or another related Education Degree
• Experience supporting adolescents or young adults who have identified special education needs or identified with behavioral deficits
